My Haiti

I’ve always been intrigued by Haiti, as I have several friends in New York City who grew up there. They would tell me about the culture, art and their resilient fellow Haitians, who have endured a fair share of challenges over the years. The latest, of course, was that devastating earthquake that hit the island nation in January 2010. My partner, James, who was there last August and who is returning this summer, experienced that same uplifting Haitian spirit while attending a town festival and watching a children’s soccer game in Bel Air. He was completely charmed by the people he met, so friendly and welcoming to a stranger. And while he recognized the poverty that exists in Haiti (even before the earthquake), he could also see the undeniable beauty there. It truly comes from within.

That’s why The Traveler’s Collection is proud to partner with Vital Voices and support its initiative to empower women and help them get back to work in Haiti so they can earn income for their families. We will donate five percent of the net profits of every purchase to this effort. In addition, we are showcasing several amazing Haitian artists in our collection with the hopes of introducing them to a worldwide audience and giving back to the Haitian community, which is working tirelessly to rebuild following the catastrophe.

Our Haitian artisans include the Balan Family from the rural farming village of Noailles, who create exquisite metal wall sculptures from recycled steel oil drums. Jewelry designer Sibyl Denis Touat draws inspiration from the ethnic styles of Haiti and Africa to transform copper, gold and silver into beautiful contemporary accessories. Emeline Michel, one of our world music artists, is a beloved performer who blends traditional rhythms with social, political and inspirational messages. And our striking bone tableware made by artisans in Haiti has a modern yet folksy feel.

Haiti has always been on my “wish list” of destinations to visit. But for now, my greatest wish is to help the wonderful people of Haiti rebuild their lives and prosper for years to come.
