“Let us unite, seven billion strong, in the name of global common good.”
-Message for UN Day 2011 from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
Sixty-five years ago today, the United Nations announced the anniversary of the Charter of the UN, a day for people of the world to be aware and supportive of the UN’s aims and achievements. Twenty-four years later, in 1971, this day was taken up a notch in the calendar of celebrations as it was declared an international holiday.
Now, on October 24th, member states view UN Day as a public holiday. International schools throughout the world live it up by celebrating the diversity of their student body with cultural performances, food fairs, and the works. A great antecedent to Thanksgiving, UN Day is the ultimate opportunity to share our gratitude with humanitarian workers worldwide, such as those shown in this fantastic film, shot in 40 countries in under 9 weeks:
Happy UN Day!
