One of my biggest inspirations was The Nike Foundation’s “Girl Effect” campaign, which shines light on the powerful social and economic change brought about when women have the opportunity to participate in their society.

I’ve had the pleasure of being introduced to two women who share my inspiration - Carole Marshi and Alison Levasseur, the founders of CALM, a beautiful line of kaftans handmade in Lebanon (the label’s name is an anagram of the founders’ initials). While the uniqueness and high quality of the kaftans certainly make them special, what makes them a must have item for women travelers is the fact that they support and empower underserved women in Carol’s home country of Lebanon.

The kaftans, made from the finest Egyptian cotton, come in a chic array of colors and patterns and are beautifully finished by hand with lace and bead work. Best of all, the creation and sales of these caftans helps support Lebanese women, many of them widows, by giving them a job they can do from home while taking care of their children.

If you’re like me and you like to buy things that make you look good and feel good, especially when you travel, check out this selection of remarkable kaftans!
