I have spent many hours in various markets throughout Africa looking for the perfect mask. These powerful cultural symbols are beloved and highly collectible because of their beauty and the stories behind them. Whether used as wall art or sculpture in your home, they add a touch of exotic interest to any room. I enjoy telling friends about the origins and traditional functions of each of the masks in my collection.
Animal masks are used in a society dance to honor a village god called “the Do.” Each dancer plays the role of a particular animal. This mask from Burkina Faso features the Crocodile Design, danced for harvest rites. It ranges in size from 15" to 17".
